Here's the opening salvo to Boundless. What do you think? Is it an attention grabber?
She strolled in like she owned the place and ordered a dirty martini, straight up. Understandable if I stood behind a bar with my sleeves rolled up and a dishrag slung over my shoulder, but I'm a therapist in private practice sitting behind a desk. Dark sunglasses and a scarf conceal her oval face, my nighttime interloper shuts the door behind her and we are alone in my Clayton, MO office.
"I think you want Dooley's Bar across the street," I say, looking up from my desk. At least this breaks the monotony of writing invoices and billing third party payers.
She ignores my remark and removes her scarf and black sable coat. My Spartan office instantly smells like a pool filled with gardenias in bloom. She sits across from me and crosses her long legs. Off come the dark shades. Nor a red hair out of place, her sequined green cocktail dress reveals plenty of curves; my eyes shift from her cleavage to the bling as she fishes a cigarette from her purse and lights it.
I immediately recognize that iconic face from her book jackets, those green cat eyes and classic high cheek bones. Blaze Stark, mega best-selling YA author and homegrown St. Louisan is back in town.
